# “No users selected” when grading an assignment

This message can appear when the assignment’s current filters leave no students in the grading list. Clear the filters first

1. Open the **Assignment** in your module and select the **Submissions** tab.
2. Clear any text in the student search field. Set the **Status** filter to **All**.
3. If you have selected a group, change the group filter to **All participants**.
4. Open **Advanced filters**, if shown. Clear any other filters, such as **Marking state**, and click **Apply**.
5. If the first-name or surname letter filters are visible, set both to **All**. Select **Reset table preferences** if that option appears.
6. Return to **Grade** and select the student you want to mark.

**Do not select “Requires grading” to fix an empty list.** That option narrows the list further and may exclude the student you need. Once students appear again, you can use it to show only work that needs grading.
