# How to share a file from OneDrive

Files in your OneDrive are private until you share them. Follow these steps to create a link for a lecturer, student or colleague:
1. Sign in to **OneDrive** with your IMU account.
2. Find the file, select it and click **Share**.
3. Open **Link settings** (the settings icon beside **Copy link**).
4. Choose who can open the link:
| Option | Who can access the file |
| ---- | ---- |
| **Specific people** | Only the people you name |
| **People in your organisation with the link** | Anyone in the organisation who receives the link |
| **Anyone with the link** | Anyone who receives or is forwarded the link, if IMU permits this option |
5. Set the permission to **Can view** unless the recipient needs to edit the file. Click **Apply**.
6. Click **Copy**, then paste the link into your eLearn submission, email or message.

||| For an assignment submission: Make sure the lecturer can access the link and keep the file in OneDrive until marking is complete. Moving a shared file can cause its link to stop working.

| IMU IT policy: When sharing files from your IMU OneDrive, follow IMU’s current IT and data protection policies. Check who can access the link and use Can view unless editing is required. Do not use Anyone with the link for files containing student information, assessment materials or other confidential content unless IMU IT has authorised that sharing method.
